The hallway without doors

I was walking through a corridor with walls made of moving water. The light was that gray-blue you get just before dawn. My mother stood at the end. When I reached her, she had my face. I tried to speak but only birds came out of my mouth — small ones, the color of paper. She wasn't surprised. She held one in her hand and said something I couldn't hear over the water.
